California’s New Fire Hazard Maps Are Out—Is Your Home Now at Risk?

After more than a decade, California has released updated Fire Hazard Severity Zone (FHSZ) maps—and they’re raising eyebrows across the state.

CAL FIRE’s revamped maps now classify approximately 6.8 million acres of land as being in fire hazard zones. In Los Angeles County alone, more than 440,000 acres were added to fire-prone areas, a 30% jump that includes more than 1.2 million acres now marked as Very High Fire Hazard Severity Zones.

If you own a home in or near a wildland area, these updates could directly impact your insurance, your safety—and your peace of mind.

See Where You Stand

These maps aren’t based on assumptions. They’re built from real, location-specific data: fire history, terrain, wind patterns, vegetation, and more.

Don’t guess whether you’re in a high-risk area. Know.

What Being in a Fire Zone Could Mean for You

Being in a fire hazard zone might:

  • Affect your homeowners insurance: Premiums can increase, and some providers may not renew your policy at all.
  • Trigger new requirements: Local ordinances or building codes may change, especially around defensible space.
  • Put you at higher risk during fire season: Knowing your zone allows you to prepare accordingly—before it’s too late.
